THE 2017 OUTDOOR SHOW AND RALLY SEASON ENDS THIS MONTH
Well, here we are in September, and just where has the Show season gone?! It really doesn't seem two minutes since we were preparing to visit the first show at the NEC, in February, and here we are now thinking about a visit to the October Indoor.
In between, we seem to have crammed a lot in, with one thing or another. In the recent past we have been to Lincolnshire Steam and Vintage Rally, which turned out to be a very windy one too, so we were all glad of the extra layers in the evenings. There was a goodly number of Motorhomes there, some, like ourselves with exhibits. Dennis the scale tractor made an appearance in the ring on Saturday in the company of around 100 other exhibits, mostly steam traction engines which made for a wonderful display.
We were delighted that Angela Luckman along with a very kind neighbour visited us on Saturday afternoon, we had all been aware that it was just a year since Terry was taken ill at the show and very sadly died a few days later.
The other sad news at the show came from Peter and Maureen Hewson who told us of John Cheviot's very recent death. Many of you will remember 'Marshall' John and all the work he did both organising and helping to run rallies. Since Lincoln, I have spoken to Sue and she has asked me to pass on her, and the family's, thanks for the kind thoughts from everyone.
Bank Holiday weekend saw us at Stapleford Park, near Melton Mowbray, the home of the Stapleford Miniature Railway for the Show which seems to have settled into it's 3 day pattern now. We were certainly blessed this year with wonderful weather on all 3 days, and record crowds, to the extent that we were passing jugs of water down the queues of people waiting their turn on the miniature railway! Lovely to see so many people enjoying that and all the other exhibits.
We were pleased to hear that the Malvern Show had been a good one, and that there were a good selection of American RV's in attendance. Hopefully the end of season Show at Lincoln will be similarly blessed, and that will be the last the outdoor show until it all kicks off again in 2018, as I said at the beginning just where has this season disappeared to!
Hopefully, this time next week we will be at The Bedford Steam & Country Show next to The Shuttleworth Collection of aircraft and automobiles. This show is always a favourite and well worth a visit for a day, or longer. There is always so much to see and the number of full size traction engines in attendance is amazing. The smaller scale engines are always well represented and delight all the visitors by chugging around in the designated safe areas so that they can be seen in action out and about as well as in the ring.
For the rest we keep hearing from people about to depart the shores for sunnier climes over the autumn and winter, travel safely all of you to wherever your wheels are pointing and enjoy the coming weeks.
Finally, spare a thought for one of our roving reporters, Sandra Beck, she is currently suffering from a broken arm, having lost a fight with a piece of bailer twine that became entangled around her feet causing her to fall awkwardly while out on a dog walk. She is now well and truly plastered sorry Sandra couldn't resist that one!!! Seriously we wish Sandra a speedy recovery.
Best wishes to you all - Jeni Rees, Editor

THE UNSTABLE CURRENCY EXCHANGE RATE - £ Sterling to $ USA
NO GOOD NEWS YET - During the last month the Dollar Exchange Rate has risen and fallen to aroun £1.27-£1.32, how long it will stay at this level is unknown and cannot be forecast. The low rate still means that all importers of American motorhomes, trailers and other parts and accessories purchased from the United States are all paying between 15 and 18 per cent more than a year ago. US suppliers have recently started to increase their prices as well. The exchange rate is reflected in the cost of air freight and UK import duty and VAT. However exports from the UK have risen since June and full order books are still being reported by a number of companies in the UK, all of which is good news. How long the dollar exchange rate will remain at the lowest rate since the 1980's nobody can forecast but it will probably be a year or more before exchange rates improve significantly.
